Scalda trains the skilled people who carry out the Zeeland transitions: technicians, process operators, cooks and food specialists. Within New Waves, Scalda is not a party on the sidelines but a co-applicant, together with HZ University of Applied Sciences and Impuls Zeeland, and you notice that in what happens at KAAP.

The bridge between company and classroom
Where companies have a question and education has a programme, someone has to bring the two together. At Scalda the practor-led research groups do that, together with the HZ professorships and HZ Nexus. They translate what happens in the workshop into what students learn, and the other way round. Scalda also sits in the New Waves programme management, which meets every month.
The Water research chair
Scalda's first practorate works on a research method for vocational education that renews both the work placement and the curriculum. The approach comes from the "undiscovered best practice": working out with skilled people in manufacturing what the best way is to make something, and then bringing that knowledge back into the programme. That way practical experience becomes something you can pass on instead of something that stays in the heads of a few people.
At the cradle of the wind programmes
Zephyros exists because Scalda and HZ, together with World Class Maintenance, wanted to take on the maintenance challenge around offshore wind. You can see that at KAAP today: Zephyros has its home base here, together with Scalda, WindDock and HZ. In the AIRTuB project the partners work on automated inspection and repair of turbine blades, with TNO, TU Delft, InHolland, Eneco, Stork and Demcon.
From the kitchen to the Food Academy
On the food side Scalda develops the Food Academy together with FoodDelta Zeeland, SVO and HZ: masterclasses built around what companies themselves say they need. Scalda is also at the table for the start of the Food Innovation Centre and for Voedsel van Morgen, the youth lab where young food professionals think about how to attract new talent.
Also for people already at work
With HZ and the Zeeland labour market region, Scalda is building a learning community around the energy and raw materials transition. It is not for students but for people already in the trade who have to keep learning because their work is changing. What works there is measured and adjusted, so the offer grows with the demand.
Seven locations in the province
Scalda is not only on the Kenniswerf in Vlissingen. Goes has four locations, including the Techniekhuis on the Industriestraat, and Terneuzen one more. In the Joint Research Center Zeeland in Middelburg, Scalda shares a high-tech lab with HZ and UCR, where students, teacher-researchers and companies work together on questions around water, energy and food.
